On Tuesday 2 June, Newhaven students, families, carers, staff and invited guests came together at Tramshed in Woolwich for a very special screening of the film created during our three-week project with Protein Dance Company.
The evening was a real celebration of the students’ creativity, courage and achievements. We were pleased to welcome Councillor Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Culture, Equalities and Leisure, and Councillor Linda Bird, Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich. We were also joined by Bethan Tomlinson, who was Director of Tramshed at the time of the project, alongside parents, carers, Newhaven staff and other invited guests.
The film was brilliant and deeply touching. It captured not only the movement and creative work developed during the project, but also the emotional journey the students went on together. Seeing the transformation of the young people on screen was incredibly moving. The film showed students growing in confidence, building friendships, supporting one another and finding ways to express themselves openly and honestly. Audience members were struck by “how open the young people were about their feelings,” “how much they all bonded together,” and the “shift from isolation to togetherness.” One person described seeing “the confidence blossom through each student/performer,” while another commented on the “vulnerability of the students” and how powerful it was to watch them grow in pride and belief in themselves.
The Q&A after the screening gave students another chance to be celebrated. It was clear from the response in the room that the project had touched many people. Audience members described the young people as “very talented,” “amazing,” and “powerful just as you are.” One message to the students read, “You are worthy of time, care, opportunity and love,” while another said, “We are so proud of you. Never ever doubt yourselves.” Other responses included, “Keep letting your light shine,” “You are capable of beautiful and positive things in life,” and “You are perfect as you are.”
The impact of Protein Dance’s work was also clear from the feedback. Guests described the project as “life changing,” “exceptional in its humanity and artistry,” and “a rare and extremely valuable contribution.” One audience member wrote, “Protein help bring people on the outside right to the inside,” while another said, “Fund more projects like this. They open doors, hearts and minds.” The evening reminded us how powerful the arts can be for young people, especially when they are given time, trust and the right creative support. The project gave students the chance to work together, take risks, reflect on their experiences and see themselves in a new light.
We would like to say a huge thank you to Protein Dance Company for their care, skill and commitment throughout the project, and to Tramshed for hosting such a memorable evening. Most of all, congratulations to our students, who shone on screen and made everyone incredibly proud. Professional event photography by Roswitha Chesher.
