Engage Provision at Newhaven School

"I just wanted to say a massive thank you! With you being there today and your continuous support in general, you have changed my daughter's life. Things are still very hard for her as we all know, but you have really made a difference for us all."

Trust. Restore. Achieve.

At Newhaven School, our values of Trust, Restore and Achieve underpin everything we do. We believe that every student deserves to feel safe, valued and included within our school community, regardless of the challenges they may face.

Our Engage Provision provides targeted support for students who require additional intervention to overcome barriers to learning, whilst remaining fully connected to mainstream school life. Through building trusting relationships, restoring confidence and engagement, and supporting students to achieve their full potential, Engage plays a key role in our inclusive approach to education.

Our aim is for students to remain Newhaven students first and foremost, with Engage providing additional support where needed. We want every student to maintain meaningful connections with their peers, teachers, curriculum and wider school community whilst developing the skills, resilience and independence required for future success.

Engage is not a separate destination within the school. It is a bridge that enables students to access learning successfully, participate fully in school life and make sustained progress towards their personal, academic and social goals.

An Inclusive Approach

At Newhaven School, we are committed to ensuring that all students, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), have access to a broad, ambitious and inclusive curriculum.

Engage supports this commitment by providing carefully planned interventions that enable students to access learning, develop independence and successfully participate in Gardens education wherever possible.

Our provision reflects our belief that students achieve best when they feel a strong sense of belonging, experience high expectations and receive the right support at the right time.

What Does Engage Provide?

Engage offers targeted interventions designed to address identified barriers to learning whilst ensuring students remain connected to their mainstream education.
Students may access Engage through one of two pathways.

SEND and EHCP Provision

Some students access Engage because their Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) identifies specific support that the school is required to provide.

This may include:

  • Speech and Language Therapy (SALT)
  • Educational Psychologist (EP) programmes
  • Clinical Psychology support
  • Counselling
  • Specialist SEND interventions
  • Social, emotional and mental health support
  • Other provision specified within an EHCP

Where provision is outlined within an EHCP, the school has a statutory duty to ensure that support is delivered effectively, monitored regularly and reviewed in partnership with families and external professionals.

Academic Intervention

Students may also be referred for targeted intervention in English and Mathematics where specific learning needs have been identified.

Support may focus on:

  • Reading fluency and comprehension
  • Literacy development
  • Numeracy skills
  • Communication and language development
  • Memory and processing skills
  • Organisation and study skills
  • Emotional literacy and learning confidence

Interventions are evidence-informed and utilise recognised approaches, including principles drawn from MeLSA and ELSA programmes where appropriate.

Identifying and Accessing Support

Teachers, pastoral staff, Heads of Department and the SEND team work collaboratively to identify students who may benefit from additional support.

The referral process includes:

  1. Identification of a specific barrier to learning.
  2. Discussion with relevant staff.
  3. Completion of a referral outlining the student’s needs.
  4. Creation of clear and measurable SMART targets.
  5. Implementation of an appropriate intervention.
  6. Ongoing monitoring, review and evaluation of impact.

This graduated approach ensures that interventions are purposeful, responsive and focused on improving outcomes for individual students.

Working in Partnership

We recognise that successful support is built on strong partnerships between school, families, students and external agencies.

Parents and carers are kept informed throughout the intervention process and are involved in reviewing progress and identifying next steps. Where appropriate, external professionals contribute to planning and evaluating support to ensure students receive the provision they need.

Our Commitment

Through Engage, we seek to embody our school values of Trust, Restore and Achieve every day.

We build trusting relationships that help students feel safe and supported. We restore confidence, engagement and belief in learning when barriers arise. We empower students to achieve their personal best through ambitious expectations, inclusive practice and carefully targeted support.

Our goal is for every student to leave Newhaven with the knowledge, skills, confidence and independence needed to succeed in education, employment and life beyond school.
