On Wednesday 15th January, we began our 3-session project with Berkeley Homes looking at how Maths is used in the workplace within various roles alongside the different career opportunities on offer within the company and the routes into them.

The first session kicked off with the Social Impact Team and there role, not only within the company, but also within the local community. Berkeley explained to our students what some of the roles within the Social Impact Team entails, the impact that their role has had on the local community, some of the events that they have run and how important budgeting is when organising these events.

Students were then asked to organise their own social impact event for the local community, sticking to a given budget and coming up with a rationale for their target audience. Students worked in groups to come up with their ideas and use Maths to ensure they remained within budget. Students then presented their ideas to the group and it was great to see varying ideas around how to engage different groups within the community.

Before heading back to school we were taken to have a look around Woolwich Arsenal and some of the new sites that have been created by the Social Impact Team at Berkeley to add value to the community. This was a great opportunity for our students to see some of the great activities, events and spaces that are accessible to them in our local area.

It was great to hear lots of talk on the way home about what students had learnt, interest in job roles that they did not know existed prior to the trip and eagerness to return for our second session.
