Students who had expressed a keen passion for getting into the performance arts industry were taken on an inspiring behind-the-scenes visit of Greenwich Theatre, where they were given a unique opportunity to step inside the world of professional theatre-making.

Throughout the visit, students explored what happens beyond the stage, gaining insight into the wide range of careers that bring a production to life. From acting and directing to lighting, sound, stage management and front-of-house roles, they discovered just how many different skills and people are involved in creating live performance. They also learned more about how actors work day-to-day, the training routes into the industry and the many different ways people find their place within theatre.

A real highlight was seeing part of a live rehearsal in action. Watching a production take shape in real time gave students a genuine sense of the creative process, collaboration and problem-solving that sits at the heart of theatre. They also had the chance to hear about the history of the theatre itself and its role within the local arts community, helping them understand how venues like this support both emerging and professional talent.

This visit marks an exciting first step in a much bigger journey. Later in the summer term, students will take part in hands-on work experience connected to a new adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, giving them the chance to see how a production is built from rehearsal room to stage. They will work closely with theatre professionals and gain real insight into the behind-the-scenes running of a live performance.

Looking further ahead, we are also hoping to return later in the year to watch a full performance, allowing students to experience the final result from an audience perspective and reflect on everything they have learned along the way.
