Intent Implementation Impact
Overview:
The aim of Sport at Newhaven King’s Park Campus is to develop students’ physical fitness alongside developing their emotional and social wellbeing through participating in sports. It is important to us that students leave King’s Park with a love of sport and fitness as the hope is they continue healthy habits into their adult lives.
In Sport students will not only participate in sporting activities but also learn about how the human body works and adapts to sport, the health and safety risks of setting up sporting activities and how to ensure that they participate safely. Students will also learn the theory that underpins the practical elements of their course.
Intent – why are we doing it?
We encourage our students to live a healthy active lifestyle through participation in sports on a regular basis. Students have the opportunity to participate in at least two practical lessons per week based around sports they enjoy. The hope is that once they find a sport or activity in which they like, they will continue to participate during their adult lives.
To encourage independence we also deliver a unit on participation in physical fitness where students design and undertake their own fitness circuit looking at their own strengths and areas for improvement with their physical fitness.
Our curriculum offers a range of units covering both practical elements of fitness and sport as well as theoretical and an anatomical unit where students will learn about the human body and how this impacted during sport.
Implementation – how are we doing it?
In Sport we are covering a number of units that assess pupil’s practical and theoretical knowledge.
Over the course of the academic year, students will get the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports and then once they find one they prefer they will write about the rules and regulations of the game. These rules and regulations are taught to students through practical theoretical lessons which enables them to understand why and when the rules would apply.
Students will also learn about the human body and the anatomy and physiology of this. How the body adapts to sports and what happens when the body regularly participates in sporting activities.
Planning and participating in a fitness programme is another important element student’s cover and the ability to safely carry out the programme whilst making any changes needed.
Lessons are always delivered in the most dynamic way possible in order for students to understand why the theory aspects are important, but also acknowledging that they have picked a Sports course and honouring the ideal of them developing a love of sport for the rest of their lives.
Impact:
In Sport, students will discover a love of physical fitness as well as understanding the benefits of participating in sport on their emotional, social and mental wellbeing. Alongside this, students will develop their teamwork and communication skills through playing sport and participating in exercise together – all whilst having fun!
Students will also have the opportunity to self and peer assess so that they develop their verbal communication skills using sporting terminology. Using this correct terminology and developing their communication skills we hope that they can use these skills should they go on to work in the sporting industry.
Students will produce an individual portfolio including all of the work they have completed throughout the year which will include written work that they have produced individually, giving them the opportunity to develop their independent working skills as well as their literacy.
