Intent Implementation Impact

Overview:

Food technology teaches students essential cooking skills, food safety, and the impact of food on health and the environment. Through hands-on sessions, they explore global cuisines, balanced diets, and food science, preparing them for independent living and a healthy lifestyle.

Intent – why are we doing it?

The Newhaven sixth-form curriculum is designed to equip students with essential skills, knowledge, and independence for life. In our Food Studies unit, while carefully considering each student’s specific needs and interests, students will embark on projects that will prepare them for independent living.

Implementation:

The implementation of this course has been thoughtfully structured to meet students’ needs. Students will have the chance to cook dishes of their choice from scratch. These cooking lessons provide a platform for students to test and develop their skills. Lessons will include students planning a two-course meal on a budget, sourcing ingredients, preparing, and serving. And the fun bit is that students get to enjoy the dishes they prepare, as they have the option to adapt the recipe to their taste, and all of this counts towards their assessment points.

Impact:

The cooking lessons will foster student independence, while tasting events will enhance their communication and teamwork skills. By preparing a two-course meal on a budget, students will gain practical knowledge on how to budget at home, equipping them with valuable budgeting skills for the future.
