Year 7 students recently enjoyed a fascinating and memorable visit to Plumstead Fire Station, delivered in collaboration with the Heritage of London Trust. The trip offered a unique opportunity to explore the historical significance of this important local landmark while also learning about the vital role it continues to play in the community today.

Opened in 1907, Plumstead Fire Station is a striking example of Edwardian Baroque architecture, built during a period when London was investing in a new generation of carefully designed fire stations. Students were particularly interested to learn how the building reflects a moment of transition in firefighting history, having been designed to accommodate both horse-drawn engines and the newly emerging motorised vehicles. Its distinctive red brickwork, classical Portland stone detailing and decorative frieze all contribute to its status as a key architectural feature at the heart of Plumstead.

A highlight of the visit was discovering the story of the station’s iconic lantern. Historically, these lanterns acted as emergency beacons, signalling the presence of a fire station within the community. The original lantern at Plumstead was lost in the mid-20th century but thanks to funding from the Heritage of London Trust, a faithful reconstruction was completed in 2024 using archival images. The new lantern, with its handcrafted copper frame and engraved glass, has restored an important piece of the building’s heritage.

Students took part in a hands-on creative activity inspired by the station’s restored lantern. Drawing on what they had learned about its design and purpose, they created their own lamp designs, thinking carefully about how these could act as both functional beacons and symbols of the fire station within the community. This activity encouraged creativity while helping students connect more deeply with the building’s history and the importance of preserving local heritage.

During the visit, students were also given a guided tour of the station and had the chance to meet firefighters, who spoke about their roles and career pathways. This provided valuable insight into the skills, dedication and teamwork required in the fire service, inspiring many students to think about future possibilities.

Although the visit was unfortunately cut short when the firefighters were called out to an emergency, preventing students from trying out the equipment and hoses, we are hopeful that the group will have another opportunity to complete their experience. Plans are being explored for a return visit before the summer or for firefighters to visit Newhaven School instead.

Overall, the trip was an engaging blend of history, architecture and real-world learning, giving students a deeper appreciation of both the past and present importance of Plumstead Fire Station within its community.
