This week, we kicked off the LSO ‘Super Concerto’ project in the Drama Studio, with three professional musicians from the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) leading inspiring, hands-on music workshops for our students.
The project is a creative, participatory music-making experience, introducing students to the idea of a concerto—a piece of music typically written for a solo instrument accompanied by an orchestra. In this project, students will work together to create their own musical responses, drawing on the concerto structure as inspiration.
The LSO is one of the world’s leading orchestras, and through its LSO Discovery education programme, it works with schools and communities to bring live music and creative opportunities to young people. We’re proud to be one of the schools involved.
At Newhaven, we are running separate workshop series for our NEST and Gardens students, allowing each group to engage at their own pace and in ways that suit their needs and strengths.
The first session was a great success, with students engaging enthusiastically in group activities, instrumental exploration, and rhythm-based games. We look forward to continuing the project next week, which will culminate in a mini presentation to celebrate what the students have created.
