As the Easter holidays approach, we want to ensure young people stay safe in our community. Here are key steps parents can take, along with essential local support services.

Practical Safety Tips for Young People

Know where they are & who they’re with

  • Set clear expectations about where they are going and when they will be home.
  • Encourage them to check in with you at agreed times.
  • Save key contacts in their phone, including yours and trusted adults.

Stay aware in public spaces

  • Avoid risky areas and stay in well-lit, busy locations.
  • Trust their instincts—if they feel uncomfortable, they should leave and seek help.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash or valuables like expensive headphones.

Online safety matters

  • Monitor social media use and discuss online risks, including cyberbullying and grooming.
  • Encourage them to only add and talk to people they know in real life.
  • Remind them to never share personal details or locations online.

Encourage safe travel

  • Walk with friends when possible and avoid shortcuts through isolated areas.
  • Plan journeys in advance, know bus/train routes, and carry a charged phone.
  • If using taxis or rideshares, book through official apps and check driver details.

Peer pressure and making safe choices

  • Talk about saying no to risky situations, including drugs, alcohol, or carrying weapons.
  • Encourage them to think about the consequences of their actions before getting involved.
  • Make sure they know it’s okay to call you if they feel unsafe or need help.

Speak up about concerns

  • Encourage open conversations—let them know they can come to you with any worries.
  • Remind them that trusted adults (teachers, youth workers, police officers) are there to help.
  • If they witness or experience crime, they should report it safely to an adult or the police.
