Gardens arrangements for exams

Dear Year 11 Parent/Carer

Normal lessons will continue alongside exams until the last week of this term, Friday 26th May. Students are expected in school before and after exams for normal lessons, revision lessons or coursework catch up until this date. After 26th May, students will only be in school for exams, revision sessions, or if they have been asked to attend for specific coursework sessions (such as Arts Award or YMCA sport). We have personalised your child’s timetable as much as possible, but there may need to be changes or additions depending on whether we feel they could benefit from additional support in specific areas. We will let you know about these individually; please let us know if you have any queries or requests. Year 11 students attending Shooters Hill College will continue to do so until the end of June: Thursday 29th June will be the last day at college for year 11 students.

Exams can be a stressful time for students. We have scheduled some time for Year 11s to speak with Rekha Vara, our Clinical Psychologist, leading up to the exams if they would like some additional support to manage this. Deb Millward will speak with individual students to arrange specific times. On exam days students are welcome to attend from 8am to speak to their subject teachers or to have breakfast. The morning exams will start at 9am and therefore students should be in school no later than 8.45. Please ask your child to bring a bottle of water for each exam (the label must be removed before taking it into the exam hall).

Please talk to your child about the importance of being on time and having time to relax and prepare before the exam. It is really important that they sleep well the night before and are not late on the day. The exam regulations are clear that if a student arrives after the start of the exam, they may still be allowed to enter the exam room, but if they are very late they will not be admitted and may not be awarded a mark for the exam.

For the June 2023 exams, the awarding bodies have introduced two additional half-day contingency sessions. These are on Thursday 8 June 2023 and Thursday 15 June 2023. The standard contingency day remains at the end of the timetable, scheduled on Wednesday 28 June 2023. Whilst it is unlikely that these days will be needed, it is important that your child is able to attend should the need arise.

The National Record of Achievement (NRA) celebration will take place during the afternoons 21st June for Nest, 22nd June for Gardens, and 23rd June for King’s Park students. We will send invites nearer the time and we hope you will be able to attend with your child to help us celebrate their achievement at Newhaven.

Yours faithfully,

Tania Peach
