ASDAN curriculum

Within ASDAN you will work towards either an Award or Certificate in Personal Effectiveness. These courses will help prepare you for future independence, and achievement of personal goals. You will learn and practise a range of core life skills, completing real life challenges. The courses are portfolio based, with no exam. On completion the portfolio is a show case of your achievements, your strengths and your journey through the course. The portfolio can include written statements, photos, class work from across subject areas, and evidence of challenges completed outside of school (eg visiting a place of interest, trying out a new leisure activity).

At Key Stage 4 you will study for an Award in Personal Effectiveness. This can be completed at Levels 1 and 2.

At Key Stage 5 you can extend your skills further by working towards the Certificate in Personal Effectiveness, which can be completed at Levels 1, 2, or potentially 3 subject to prior learning.

To gain both the award and certificate you will be supported to produce a portfolio showing you have:

  • Taken responsibility for planning, organising and carrying out a number of activities or challenges
  • Developed and provided evidence of working with others, improving own learning and performance and problem solving
  • Developed and provided evidence of the skills of research, and communication

Throughout the course you be helped to achieve agreed challenges across a number of different modules. These include:

  • Citizenship and community
  • Sport and leisure
  • Independent Living
  • The Environment
  • Vocational preparation
  • Health and fitness
  • Science and technology
  • Beliefs and values

Although all students study the same module at the same time, there is some flexibility for you to choose challenges that are of particular interest.

This course helps develop key skills for life. We will work with you to practise some of the skills you may find difficult– enabling you to use these skills in real life with growing confidence and independence.
